Action Agenda 2009 Farmers Market - Champion: Callie Ridolfi (206) 232-8402 Leadership, marketing, and operational support for weekly Sunday market in town center for 16 weeks. Leap for Green 2009 - Champion: Lucia Pirzio-Biroli (206) 232-9147 Leap for Green event to be held Saturday, April 18th at the Community Center at Mercer View. Childrens Garden - Champion: Gordon Polson To involve children in gardening from an early age in order that they can become familiar with how food is produced and show that it does not originate at the super market or fridge. Preschool Sustainability - Champions: Bert Loosmore (206) 979-9210, Lucia Pirzio-Biroli (206) 232-9147 Working to motivate the preschools on Mercer Island to incorporate sustainability into their curriculum and operations. Certified Wildlife Habitat - Champion: Peter Donaldson 236-8114, Rita Moore Certify Mercer Island as a Wildlife Habitat Community. MI Carbon Footprint - Champion: Dr. Jonathan Harrington Work with city, communities and businesses to estimate and reduce their GHG emissions Electric Vehicles - Champion: Jason King Work to develop a demonstration project of electric vehicle infrastructure in the Pacific Northwest If you are interested in helping out, please contact the project champion.

Our Sustainable Community

This is the statement in the City Comprehensive Plan approved by our City Council that establishes sustainability as a guiding principle.

Mercer Island strives to be a sustainable community--meeting the needs of the present while preserving the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We consider the relationship between the decisions we make as a community and their long-term impacts before committing to them. We understand that our strength is dependent on an open decision-making process that takes into account the economic, environmental and social well-being of our community.
